Employee Education Materials


Educational materials, videos and information for new employees, members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), members of the Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), and employees of participating political subdivision's.

Our retirement and benefit counselors can share seminar presentations or training materials on the following topics; either in person or virtually:

  1. PERS or TRS: The Retirement Process Seminar

    This seminar, presented by a retirement and benefits counselor, provides the opportunity to learn about retirement eligibility, the retirement process, pension options, forms, timing of benefits, retiree medical, Dental-Vision-Audio (DVA) and Long-Term Care (LTC) plans.

  2. PERS or TRS: Defined Contribution Retirement Education

    This seminar, presented by a retirement and benefits counselor, provides an overview of the Defined Contribution plans for both PERS and/or TRS. The overview includes information about benefits attached to the Defined Contribution plans, including access to a retiree medical plan, Dental/Vision/Audio and Long-Term Care plans; and how to access the defined contribution account information online through Empower Retirement Financials' Web site. Retirement benefit counselors can also review options of investing advisory services and when and how funds may be withdrawn.

  3. Supplemental Annuity Plan (SBS-AP)

    This seminar, presented by a retirement and benefits counselor, provides information about the Supplemental Benefits System Annuity Plan, commonly referred to as SBS, which requires mandatory contributions from both employer and employee for state of Alaska employees and participating political subdivisions. This information can be presented in conjunction with any of the PERS seminars, as appropriate, upon request.

  4. Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP)

    This seminar, presented by a retirement and benefits counselor, provides information about the optional Deferred Compensation Plan, which offers State of Alaska employees and employees of participating political subdivisions the opportunity to make contributions into this defined contribution plan. This information can be presented in conjunction with any of the PERS or TRS seminars, as appropriate, upon request.

  5. Round-Table Question and Answer Sessions

    This forum provides the opportunity for a retirement and benefits counselor to interact with a group of like situated members to discuss any of the plans administered by the retirement section, including the Defined Benefit plans in the PERS Tiers I-III and TRS Tiers I-II, the Defined Contribution retirement plans in the PERS and TRS, the Supplemental Annuity and Deferred Compensation plan. The counselor can provide an overview of the benefits tailored to the specific group and employees are encouraged to ask questions about their benefits throughout the session.

  6. PERS or TRS: Individual counseling sessions

    During individual appointments, retirement benefit counselors can share information and answer employee's specific questions. Counselors can also show employees how to login to their accounts and access information from our Web site. Appointments are available in person in Juneau and Anchorage, by phone and by video chat.


Group Life and Voluntary Supplemental Benefits

This video is designed to help employees make informed decisions during Open Enrollment.

The State of Alaska Voluntary Supplemental Benefits (VSB) plan includes life insurance, critical illness, and long- and short-term disability. The VSB plan is administered by MetLife, and enrollment is managed by Benefitfocus. Voluntary Supplemental Benefits offer you the opportunity to obtain additional benefits that best suit the needs of you and your family.

A short, high-level overview of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) Defined Contribution Retirement plan for members first hired on or after July 1, 2006. If you have additional questions or want to dive deeper into your individual retirement plan(s), please make an appointment with a State of Alaska, Division of Retirement and Benefits counselor.

TRS Defined Contribution Plan (DCR)

A short, high-level overview of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) Defined Contribution Retirement plan for participants first hired on or after July 1, 2006. If you have additional questions or want to dive deeper into your individual retirement plan(s), please make an appointment with a State of Alaska, Division of Retirement and Benefits counselor.
