An overview of all the plans offered by the Division of Retirement and Benefits.

Defined Contribution Plans

PERS & TRS Defined Contribution Retirement Plan

Employees who first entered service in a PERS or TRS-eligible position after June 30, 2006 are automatically enrolled in the Defined Contribution Retirement Plan. A portion of members’ wages and a matching employer contribution are made to this plan before it is taxed. These contributions, plus any change in value and minus any fees or other charges, are payable to the member or their beneficiary at a future date. This plan also offers retiree medical, dental-vision-audio, long-term care, and health reimbursement arrangement benefits to members who are eligible based on age or service.

Deferred Compensation Plan

This is a voluntary retirement savings plan available to permanent employees, long-term non-permanent employees, and elected officials of the State of Alaska, as well as eligible employees of participating political subdivisions. Members may choose to set aside a portion of their income on a pre-tax or post-tax basis, with contributions automatically deducted from each paycheck. These funds are invested according to the member’s preferences, and the total account value—including contributions and any investment gains—is payable at a future date. The plan offers flexibility and control, allowing participants to supplement other retirement benefits and tailor their savings to meet long-term financial goals.

Supplemental Annuity Plan

This is a voluntary retirement savings plan designed for certain State of Alaska employees who are exempt from federal Social Security coverage. Eligible participants include permanent and long-term non-permanent employees, as well as elected officials. A portion of the member’s income is set aside on a pre-tax basis and invested according to individual preferences. The total account value—including contributions and any investment gains—is payable to the member or their beneficiary upon retirement, separation from service, or another qualifying event. This plan helps supplement retirement income and provides an alternative to Social Security.

Defined Benefit Plans

Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS)

The Alaska Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) offers a variety of benefits, including pension and retiree insurance benefits, to members and their survivors. Employees who first entered the PERS prior to July 1, 2006 are members of the PERS Defined Benefit (DB) Plan. This plan applies only to Tiers I, II, and III.

Teachers' Retirement System (TRS)

The Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS) offers a variety of benefits, including pension and retiree insurance benefits, to members and their survivors. Employees who first entered the TRS prior to July 1, 2006 are members of the TRS Defined Benefit (DB) Plan. This plan applies only to Tiers I and II.

Judicial Retirement System (JRS)

The Judicial Retirement System (JRS) offers a variety of benefits, including pension and retiree insurance benefits, to members and their survivors. JRS was established in 1963 as a retirement system for judges, justices, and the Administrator of the Court System. The Division of Retirement and Benefits began administering the JRS in 1980. Before that date, it was administered by the Alaska Court System.

Elected Public Official Retirement System (EPORS)

The Elected Public Officers Retirement System (EPORS) was enacted as a retirement system for elected state officials (Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Legislators). It became effective January 1, 1976 and was repealed by referendum during the 1976 general election; however, it was determined elected state officials who served in 1976 would remain in this plan. This is a closed system, all other eligible elected officials may be covered under the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

National Guard and Naval Militia Retirement System (NGNMRS)

National Guard and Naval Militia Retirement System (NGNMRS) is a retirement system which can pay you a small benefit upon separation from the Alaska army guard, air guard, or naval militia if you meet minimum eligibility provisions.
