When Sheila King moved to Alaska, she had no idea that the state would become such a meaningful chapter in her life. During her 12 years of service with the State of Alaska, Sheila worked in both Anchorage and Juneau, holding two significant roles: Accountant IV at Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) and Finance Director at Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE).

As she transitioned into retirement, Sheila embraced a new and deeply rewarding role: grandparent. She and her husband Kelly spend their days swimming, going to parks, and enjoying every bit of fun they can with their grandchildren. Retirement has also opened the door to adventure. Together, they travel often and stay active through cycling, hiking, and racquetball. Because both Sheila and Kelly had State of Alaska Tier II vesting, they retired with health benefits—something they carefully planned for through years of budgeting and aligning their goals as a couple.

Their retirement is not just about leisure but about supporting their family. With their son serving in the military, Sheila and Kelly have the gift of being able to follow him to his duty stations, help with the grandchildren, and explore new places. They are currently enjoying life in Washington state and are excited for their next big chapter: moving with their son’s family to Guam in the fall for a few years. And after that, as Sheila likes to say, who knows what adventure awaits?

For those still preparing for retirement, Sheila offers simple, meaningful advice: learn about saving and investing early—and if you haven’t started yet, start now. She emphasizes the importance of married couples working together and aligning priorities to create the retirement life they want.

Although Sheila never imagined leaving Alaska, she carries the state warmly in her heart. She misses her family and friends most, followed closely by the moose and the mountains. No matter where life takes her next, Alaska will always hold a special place in her life.
